Court Usage and Rules of Play
RESPECT FOR COURTS
-
Do not damage the court surface or put any foreign substance on the surface (e.g. chewing gum, sticky drink spills). Non-marking shoes must be worn at all times.
-
Do not leave garbage or other litter on or around the court. Use the litter or recycling bins that are provided.
-
Ensure all of your tennis gear and accessories are placed out of the way of the playing surface and will not present a hazard to players changing ends or moving for a wide ball.
-
Use the KTC courts for tennis only. Non-tennis-related activities (e.g. skateboarding, biking, pickleball, hockey, etc.) are not permitted on the courts.
-
Do not bring dogs or other pets near or on the courts. Pets must always be on a leash and strictly controlled by their owners at all times.
-
Close the gate behind you when you enter or leave the courts.
RESPECT FOR PLAYERS
-
Do not cross behind a court while a point is underway. When the point is over, move quickly across the back of the court.
-
Spectators should not applaud players’ errors, heckle players or call balls in or out.
-
Players should avoid making loud noises on court; in general, you should talk quietly if you are near courts that are in use.
-
If a ball from your court goes onto another court, wait for a break in play on that court and then politely ask to either fetch the ball or to have one of the players on that court to return the ball.
-
If the ball presents a danger to a player, alert that player immediately.
-
Return balls that come onto your court to the back of the originating court, at a break in play on that court.
-
If a ball comes onto your court and disturbs your game, call a let and replay the point.
-
Out of respect for other players and the KTC teaching staff, no unauthorized paid teaching is permitted. A maximum of 6 tennis balls is allowed on court at a time including practicing serving.
SHOT CALLS*
-
Players call shots landing in or aimed at their side of the court.
-
All out, let, or fault calls should be made promptly.
-
Any doubt must be resolved in favour of the opponent. Any ball that cannot be called out with certainty is considered to be good.
-
Players should call against themselves any ball they see clearly out, regardless of whether they are requested to do so.
-
Players should promptly acknowledge when a ball touches them, they touch the net, they double-hit a ball, the ball bounces twice, or they hit the ball before it crosses the net.
-
Players may ask their opponent “Are you sure of your call?” If the player acknowledges any doubt, they lose the point.
-
If a call is changed from out to good the point is only replayed if the out ball was put into play.
-
Players shall not put into play, or hit over the net, an obvious fault. (i.e., don’t return a serve that is clearly out).
* Rules Adapted from the Ontario Tennis Association (OTA)
Line calling is a matter of good sportsmanship:
If you are unsure if the ball was in or out - the ball is IN
If you or your partner do not agree if the ball was in or out - the ball is IN
If 1/100th of the ball touches the line - the ball is IN
Members who are in violation of the club's rules or repeatedly disregard court usage guidelines may have their membership suspended or cancelled.
